Infectiologist Günter Weiss describes in ZiB2 how dramatic the situation is in domestic hospitals.

The situation in Austria’s hospitals is dramatically worsening. According to official figures, almost half of the intensive care beds are occupied. In reality, equipment and personnel are at their limits in many regions. According to experts, there are only four days of capacity in Upper Austria and Tyrol. There are calculations according to which all intensive care units in all of Austria will be full on November 18.

Dr. Günter Weiss, infectiologist and Director of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital Innsbruck, described on Thursday in ZiB2 how dramatic the situation already is. The expert expects that the capacity limits will soon be reached. “I assume that in two weeks the number will not double, but will be significantly higher,” said Weiss.

“In Tirol already 60 per cent of the intensive care beds are occupied and it is not only the bed, which is a problem, but it is also the personnel. The staff is getting tired because they are always dealing with this issue, they don’t think of anything else 24 hours a day. Healthcare personnel are also becoming ill and increasingly affected by this infection, the infectiologist said.

30-year-olds also end up in intensive care
Dr. Weiss appeals to the population to take Corona seriously. “These people, I invite them to come to the hospital to see such patients.” The doctor also points out that the disease can affect anyone. “We also see patients, they are 30 years old and end up in intensive care.
